Medical Responses to Community Healthcare Needs

In the run-up to St John’s Day on 24 June, we are sharing a series of messages from across the St John family that spotlight the people behind our humanitarian work. These reflections recognise the contribution of 168,376 dedicated volunteers worldwide and highlight the diverse ways St John volunteers support communities and strengthen our shared mission of saving lives.

Volunteers from Guernsey’s marine ambulance service prepared a seaworthy converted car to travel from St Peter Port to Herm Island as part of a fundraising challenge for the Flying Christine III, recreating a similar 1993 voyage that helped fund the original vessel.

His Majesty The King, Sovereign Head of the Order of St John, has, on the recommendation of His Royal Highness The Grand Prior, sanctioned the promotion of Hato Hone St John’s Chancellor, John Whitehead CNZM, to a Bailiff Grand Cross of the Order.

Since joining St John International in April 2026, Axel Kularatnam, our new Social Media and Engagement Officer, has been focused on strengthening digital storytelling, building connections across the global network, and showcasing the incredible work taking place across St John organisations worldwide. Malaria remains one of Papua New Guinea’s most persistent public health challenges, particularly affecting children and young people in both urban and rural communities. Limited access to timely information and basic health knowledge often leads to delayed treatment and preventable complications.

Recognising the need for community-based education, National St John Ambulance PNG (NStJA) integrated malaria awareness into its First Aid in Schools (FAIS) program, an initiative aimed at equipping young people with life-saving skills and essential health knowledge.
