The American Society of the Order of St John was incorporated in 1957 for the purpose of supporting the St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital. The U.S. Priory was subsequently established in 1996. Its members remain deeply committed to its primary mission of supporting and developing what is now called St John Eye Hospital Group (SJEHG), offering eye care in East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza.

Members of the Priory are encouraged to visit the Hospital on their own or through Priory-sponsored pilgrimages as a way of educating others about the life changing work of the Order, the Priory and the Hospital. In addition, the U.S. Priory has many Members who are ophthalmologists and surgeons who generously donate their medical expertise at the Hospital. Significant in-kind assistance is frequently provided.

As part of its fulfilment of its mission “to support the sick and the poor in fellowship,” the U.S. Priory established the St John Volunteer Corps (SJVC). The SJVC provides Confrères with hands-on service opportunities in their local communities including assisting U.S. Military Veterans and their families, Food Banks, Medical Reserve Corps, National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and in service activities with the Alliance Orders of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and Johnanniterorden.
