Our structure

Grand Council/Great Officers

The Order is governed by a Grand Council. The ex-officio members are the Grand Prior, the other Great Officers of the Order, namely the Lord Prior, the Chancellor, the Prelate and the Sub Prior, the Chair of the Eye Hospital together with the Priors or Chancellors of each of the Priories.

Executive Committee/Trustees

The Executive Committee is a standing committee of the Grand Council. It is, subject to any directions by the Grand Prior, responsible for the general control and management of the administration of the Order. The Executive Committee members are the Charity Trustees of the Order for the purposes of the UK Charities Act 2011.

Audit and Risk sub-Committee

The Audit and Risk sub-Committee is responsible to the Executive Committee for oversight of audit and risk.

Nominations and Appointments Committee

The Nominations and Appointments Committee is a standing committee of the Grand Council. It is responsible for identifying candidates for appointment as a Great Officer, Principal Officer or Secretary General and advises the Grand Council in relation to such candidates and appointments. The Committee also evaluates candidates for appointment as the Chair of the Eye Hospital (on the recommendation of the St John Eye Hospital Board) and advises the Executive Committee accordingly.

Honours and Awards Committee

The Honours and Awards Committee is a standing committee of the Grand Council. It advises the Grand Council on all matters relating to The Order Honours and Awards system, including appointments to and promotions in the Order and to eligibility for the award of The Life Saving Medal and the Service Medal of The Order.

Pro Fide Committee

The Pro Fide Committee is a standing committee of the Grand Council. It assists the Great Officers and the Executive Committee in maintaining and enhancing the Christian nature and ethos of the Order and advises the Great Officers, the Grand Council and the Executive Committee on ecclesiastical, pastoral, spiritual, religious and related matters pertaining to the Order.

Unrecognised Orders Monitoring Group

The Unrecognised Orders Monitoring Group was set up by the Grand Council in 2021 to enable all Priories to monitor the activities of any organisation outside the recognised Orders of St John, which are the Most Venerable Order, the Johanniter Orders, and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Unrecognised orders are those which have adopted some aspects of the history, names and marks, emblems, or domain names of St John in a way that might cause confusion with and reputational damage to the recognised orders.
