Every year, World Sight Day reminds us of the vital role vision plays in living healthy, fulfilling lives and of the collective responsibility to ensure that no one is left behind in accessing eye care. This year, St John Ambulance Ghana and St John Ambulance Zambia marked the occasion with community-driven initiatives that restored sight, empowered individuals, and strengthened public health. Through free screenings, training, and outreach, both countries demonstrated how simple acts of service can transform lives and bring communities closer to a healthier, clearer future.

Dame Betty Simpson of Hato Hone St John in Whanganui, New Zealand, has been awarded her gold bar in recognition of 75 years of outstanding service to the Order. At 92 years old, she continues to actively contribute, inspiring both her local community and the wider St John family worldwide.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of former Sub-Prior Vale John Alexander Strachan GCStJ, whose nearly 70 years of service shaped St John in New Zealand and internationally. Serving as Chancellor, Sub-Prior, and Deputy Lord Prior (Establishments), John was recognised in 1997 with the Order’s highest honour, Bailiff Grand Cross.

John will be remembered with gratitude and admiration. Our heartfelt condolences go to Mrs Strachan and family.

In this reflection for the International Day of Peace (September 21), Archbishop Emeritus Sir David Moxon KNZM, KStJ, MMCM, Prelate of the Order of St John, explores what makes for true and lasting peace. Drawing on the story of Gerard of Jerusalem and the parable of the Good Samaritan, he shows how compassion, justice and solidarity across divides remain the essential ingredients of peace. His call is clear: in a world torn by conflict, we must refuse despair and instead embody faith, hope and love, living out peace through courageous acts of humanity.

On this International Day of Charity, St John celebrates the impact of volunteers who dedicate their time and skills to serving others. From Papua New Guinea to Western Australia and the Solomon Islands, their stories reveal how volunteering strengthens families, supports wellbeing, and fulfills a deep passion for helping humanity. Together, these voices remind us that charity is more than giving—it’s about compassion, connection, and building stronger communities worldwide.

Sixty young people aged 5 to 17 from the Rotherham St John Group completed an epic hour-long CPR marathon, raising £816.17 to support their local network. With their beloved building at risk of closure, the Badgers and Cadets took action, showing teamwork, enthusiasm, and leadership. Led by Sue Farmer, the event also helps teach vital first aid skills, confidence, and community spirit. Donations are still welcome to support this inspiring cause.

This International Youth Day, we celebrate the extraordinary contributions of young people who are shaping a better world. At St John International, youth are more than future leaders — they are leaders now, driving innovation, service, and global collaboration across our organisation. In honour of this global day of recognition, we’re proud to share the stories of IYAN members who are making a real difference in their communities and across borders. From first responders and advocates to students and changemakers, these young leaders embody the spirit and values of St John.

Coast Guard Day on 4 August honors the bravery and lifesaving efforts of Malta’s emergency teams, including volunteers from St John Ambulance and Rescue Malta. A recent sea rescue showcased their quick response and teamwork under challenging conditions. Volunteers overcame difficult terrain to assist, earning heartfelt thanks from the rescued person’s family. This day celebrates their courage, dedication, and vital role in protecting lives on both sea and land.
