Coast Guard Day on Monday, 4 August, is a special occasion to recognise and celebrate the courageous rescue and lifesaving efforts carried out by emergency teams across Malta. Among these heroes are the dedicated volunteers and professionals of St John Ambulance and Rescue Malta, whose swift response and teamwork save lives in challenging conditions.
A recent incident highlights the bravery and commitment of these lifesavers. When an emergency call came through about a potential sea rescue, the team sprang into action without hesitation. As one volunteer recalls, “When the call came through about a potential emergency at sea, we didn’t hesitate to head out immediately to support our teams, who were already deployed in two separate locations. One ambulance crew and two water rescue teams were positioned nearby due to an ongoing swimming event.”

The rescue site was difficult to access by vehicle, so the volunteer ran down from the top of a hill, crossing stairs and sandy terrain to reach the dock. There, the team regrouped to carefully transfer the casualty from the boat to shore.
“It’s in moments like these that you truly understand the importance of teamwork, quick thinking, and commitment. I’m proud to be part of a team that’s always ready to respond—no matter the challenge,” said Adelina, a volunteer with St John Ambulance and Rescue Malta.

Alongside the volunteer’s testimony, heartfelt gratitude was also expressed by the wife of the casualty, who praised the professionalism, empathy, and clear communication demonstrated by the team during a stressful and emotional time.
As we mark Coast Guard Day this year, we salute all those who dedicate themselves to safeguarding lives at sea and on land. Their unwavering courage and dedication are a source of pride for Malta and a beacon of hope in emergencies.
