Championing Safety and Wellbeing: Melanie Davis,

Melanie Davis, Health, Safety and Wellbeing Manager at St John Ambulance Victoria, Australia, brings over 30 years of cross-industry experience to her role. A seasoned safety generalist, Melanie oversees health, workplace safety, wellbeing, and workers’ compensation, ensuring that both staff and volunteers operate in a secure and supportive environment.

Before joining St John nearly two years ago, Melanie led the health and safety team at Victoria Police. Her early focus at St John was transforming injury management and workers’ compensation processes. By identifying risk trends, improving return-to-work pathways, and strengthening support systems, she has significantly reduced claim durations while improving outcomes for staff and volunteers.

For Melanie, safety is more than a set of procedures—it’s central to St John’s mission of service to humanity.

“If we create a safe workplace, we create a safe environment for everyone; our people, our patients, and our community,” she says.

A passionate advocate for cultural change, Melanie collaborates across departments to embed proactive risk management and psychologically safe practices. She is especially committed to mentoring emerging safety professionals and building diverse teams that challenge bias, strengthen decision-making, and foster inclusivity.

Outside of work, Melanie is a proud single mother, a long-time Melbourne Storm supporter, and a dedicated volunteer with Disaster Relief Australia, supporting veterans and continuing a family legacy of service.

Melanie’s career reflects resilience, leadership, and compassion. Her story demonstrates that strong safety cultures are not built solely on systems—they are nurtured by people who genuinely care.
