St John Ambulance Kenya recently hosted the EMEA Master Trainer Programme in Nairobi, bringing together delegates from across the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region for an intensive training experience aimed at enhancing the quality and consistency of first aid education.
Part of the EMEA Excellence and Equity in Training Initiative, the programme focuses on improving access to standardised, high-quality first aid training while building sustainable training capacity across St John associations. By equipping trainers with advanced instructional skills, the initiative ensures that communities throughout the region benefit from reliable, effective, and consistent lifesaving education.
The Nairobi session marks the fourth Master Trainer Programme since 2025, following earlier sessions held in Cape Town (12–16 May 2025), Nairobi (21–25 July 2025), and Johannesburg (13–17 October 2025). The most recent programme took place on 10–14 February 2026, continuing to strengthen a growing network of highly skilled trainers across the EMEA region.
This latest cohort included delegates from the St John Associations of Tanzania, Uganda, and Ghana, as well as the Priory of Kenya. Participants exchanged experiences, explored collaborative approaches, and developed strategies to deliver high-quality first aid training within their home associations.

At the heart of the programme was a series of interactive and practical training sessions designed to build both technical expertise and instructional confidence. Delegates engaged in first aid skills standardisation to ensure training delivery remains accurate, consistent, and aligned with best practice across the region, while also exploring effective teaching methodologies to better structure sessions, engage diverse audiences, and adapt to different learning styles, alongside a strong emphasis on communication and presentation skills, where participants practised content delivery, received constructive feedback, and strengthened their ability to convey complex lifesaving techniques clearly and confidently.

The sessions also addressed barriers to learning, encouraging trainers to identify challenges and develop strategies to improve engagement and understanding, while emphasising the importance of creating safe and inclusive learning environments that support full participation and reinforce the behaviours needed for engaging, learner-centred experiences.

A core objective of the programme is for participants to act as multipliers of knowledge within their organisations. By strengthening their training capacity, delegates are equipped to train additional staff in their home countries, significantly expanding access to lifesaving skills across the region.
The sessions were delivered by an experienced facilitation team from across the Order, providing international expertise and best practice in first aid education. Through initiatives like the Master Trainer Programme, St John associations across the EMEA region continue to demonstrate their commitment to building resilient, health-conscious communities by empowering trainers to deliver lifesaving skills where they are needed most.

The EMEA Excellence and Equity in Training Initiative is a regionally developed and managed programme to improve the quality and consistency of first aid training across the EMEA region. It is funded through St John International using funds donated to the Order of St John.
