A Lifetime of Service: Ruth Hlanganiso

For many people, service is a responsibility. For others, it becomes a lifelong calling. For Ruth Hlanganiso, service has been a guiding principle throughout her life, shaping her journey across faith, community leadership, and emergency medical support.

Ruth’s commitment to serving others began in 1984 when she started working as a Youth Advisor in the Methodist Church. Her dedication to community development quickly became evident, leading her to take on greater leadership roles. By 1989, she was serving as both the Chairwoman of the Women’s Union Connexional and Treasurer of the Women’s Union in Zimbabwe, positions that allowed her to influence and support women within the church and the broader community.

Her passion for helping others later expanded into emergency medical and community care services. In September 2007, Ruth joined St John Ambulance Zimbabwe, marking the beginning of a significant chapter in her life. Within just two years, her dedication and commitment saw her rise to the role of Trainer, where she focused on Home-Based Care and First Aid training. Through this role, she helped equip individuals and communities with lifesaving knowledge and practical health-care skills.

Ruth’s leadership and hard work did not go unnoticed. In August 2012, she was promoted to Ambulance Service Supervisor and Transport Manager, a role that placed her at the heart of coordinating vital emergency and transport services. She served in this capacity with distinction until her retirement in December 2021, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and impactful service.

Retirement, however, did not mark the end of her involvement. Ruth continued to remain actively connected with the St John Brigade, maintaining her commitment to supporting the organization and its mission.

Her decades of service were formally recognised in 2025, during the St John Ambulance Zimbabwe Centenary Celebrations, when she was invested as a Member of the Order of St John. This honour celebrated not only her years of dedication but also her lasting contribution to humanitarian service.

Continuing her journey of leadership, Ruth was appointed Mashonaland Area Brigade Commissioner in January 2026, a role that further reflects the trust and respect she has earned within the organisation.

Throughout her remarkable journey, Ruth has developed and demonstrated invaluable qualities including confidence, teamwork, communication, supervision, and leadership. At the heart of all her achievements lies a simple but powerful principle: Service Above Self.

Her story stands as an inspiring reminder that true leadership is built on compassion, commitment, and a lifelong dedication to helping others.
