A Legacy of Leadership: Farewell to Sub-Prior Dr Steve Evans

Dr Steve Evans’ journey with St John has been one of unwavering dedication, deep compassion, and transformative leadership across the international St John community. Since his appointment as Sub-Prior of the Order of St John in June 2022, Steve has represented the Order on the global stage with humility, strength, and vision — championing strategic initiatives and supporting regional growth.

A leading Maxillo-Facial surgeon, Steve first joined Hato Hone St John in 1985, beginning a service career that would span nearly four decades. He was appointed Area Chair, a position he held for 16 years, and during that time also served as Regional Chair, offering strategic guidance and local support with great integrity. In 2014, Steve was appointed Chancellor for the St John Priory in New Zealand, a national leadership role he held with distinction until 2020.

During his tenure as Sub-Prior, Steve has been instrumental in advancing the work of the Order globally. He was a driving force behind the development of roadmaps in both the EMEA and Americas regions, in which his leadership and persistence made a significant difference. He also played a critical role in supporting the St John Association in Fiji, particularly after the sudden passing of CEO Emma Bovoro. With empathy and skill, Steve helped review and strengthen their governance and guided the refresh of their Council, ensuring they emerged stronger and more resilient.

Steve has also championed the development of the St John Resource Hub, a central platform where all St John establishments can share resources, standard operating procedures, and masterclass videos to collaborate more easily and effectively. The Resource Hub was Steve’s baby, and it would not have been born without his persistence and vision. It will be a vital resource for the whole St John family.

Steve still regularly volunteers at the coalface as a Patient Transport Driver for St John, taking patients to hospital appointments on a weekly basis — a testament to his enduring commitment to hands-on service.

To anyone considering joining the Order, his advice is simple and heartfelt:

“I would welcome anyone wanting to join our organisation and tell them that they are going to have a great opportunity to make a real difference to members of their community, either on an emergency basis, or in other activities that St John undertakes.”

As we bid farewell to Dr Steve Evans in his role as Sub-Prior, we do so with deep gratitude and admiration. His leadership has left an indelible mark on the Order and on all those privileged to serve alongside him. Steve’s legacy is not only reflected in the milestones achieved under his guidance but in the spirit of compassion, collaboration, and quiet strength he brought to every role. Though his chapter as Sub-Prior comes to a close, his influence will continue to shape the Order’s future. We will miss him and his twinkling smile. We thank him for his service, celebrate his remarkable journey, and wish him every happiness in the years ahead.
