Building a First Aid Culture in Tanzania

St John Ambulance Association of Tanzania continues to lead the way in emergency preparedness by taking first aid directly to the people. In the last quarter, our teams were on the ground at two major public gatherings, providing life-saving cover while educating thousands on the importance of being first aid ready.

1. Shinyanga Sukuma Festival

Ready to protect 3,000+ People | Shinyanga Region

The vibrant Sukuma Festival brought together over 3,000 community members, St John was there to ensure safety and visibility.

Our Approach

– Setting up a fully equipped First Aid Post with four volunteers at the event grounds.

– Responded to 3 first aid scenarios including minor injuries, fainting, and fatigue. All cases were managed on-site.

– Mounted a St John Pavilion showcasing our work, and equipment. Hundreds stopped by to learn more about our membership and training opportunities.

The Impact

Beyond treating casualties, the festival became a classroom. By engaging directly with the public and other stakeholders, we demystified first aid and sparked interest in training. This event strengthened St John’s presence in Shinyanga and showed that communities are safer when first aid is available.

2. National Touch Event at Itilima, Simiyu

Ready to support 2,000+ People | Itilima, Simiyu Region

At the National Touch Event in Itilima District, St John Tanzania in collaboration with District Health Department provided emergency cover for over 2,000 participants while using the platform to advance our education mission.

Our Approach

– Deployed a first aid team of five volunteers for the duration of the event.

– Conducted health education and safety briefings.

– Erected a St John Pavilion with demonstrations, training information, and volunteer recruitment.

– Engaged community leaders and youth on the importance of emergency preparedness.

The Impact

The event created new pathways for first aid education in Itilima District of Simiyu. We didn’t just respond to emergencies — we prevented them by building awareness. The pavilion generated strong interest in St John training opportunities and positioned us as a key partner in community health.

Why This Matters: Building a First Aid Culture in Tanzania

These two events prove one thing: when St John shows up, lives are protected and knowledge is shared.

Our mandate goes beyond responding to emergencies. We are committed to creating a first aid culture across Tanzania. By showing up at schools, festivals, and community events with both a First Aid Post and an Education Pavilion, we achieve two things at once:

  1. Immediate Safety: Professional emergency response when it’s needed most
  2. Long-term Resilience: Training ordinary citizens — students, teachers, healthcare workers, and community members — to act confidently in an emergency

Every person trained is another life that can be saved. Every pavilion visit is a step toward a Tanzania where no one is a bystander in a crisis.

In the coming months, St John Tanzania will continue expanding these outreach programs to more regions of Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Arusha and Mbeya through the Focused First Aid Project, because access to first aid and first aid education should not be a privilege — it should be a right.
