Inspiring Leadership: Jane Van-Tiel

We continue to celebrate the incredible women who make St John a vital force in communities around the world. From frontline responders saving lives to leaders shaping the future of the organisation, these women inspire, lead, and make a lasting impact every single day.

Today, we shine a spotlight on Jane Van-Tiel OStJ, the newly appointed Chief Commissioner of St John Ambulance Cymru. Jane began her tenure on January 1st, 2026, becoming only the second person to hold this prestigious role within the charity’s Executive Leadership Team.

Jane’s connection to St John spans over 30 years. “I first became a volunteer as a Cadet because my mother wanted my sisters and me to join,” she recalls. “I’m the only one who stayed. I started in Chichester, West Sussex, and later moved to Wales, where I became actively involved with the Pontypridd Division. Over the years, I’ve held many roles from youth leader to division and county manager.”

Among the highlights of her journey, Jane fondly remembers representing St John Ambulance Cymru as part of the civilian contingent at the late Queen’s funeral procession, which included a week of intensive training. “I am enormously proud to have been given the opportunity to take part,” she says.

As Chief Commissioner, Jane is committed to representing volunteers across Wales. “Being part of the Executive Leadership Team allows me to be the voice for our people. I’m getting out and about, meeting St John volunteers across different counties, and taking part in events. I’m especially looking forward to promoting first aid and encouraging more people to get involved.”
