St John International is delighted to announce the appointment of Sir David John Moxon KNZM KStJ as its new Prelate. Sir David brings a wealth of experience in Anglican leadership, ecumenical relations, and community service to this esteemed role.
A Distinguished Career in Faith and Service
Born in Palmerston North, New Zealand, in 1951, Sir David’s dedication to service began early, including a year as a youth worker in Fiji with Volunteer Service Abroad in 1970. He holds master’s degrees from both Massey University (in education and sociology) and the University of Oxford (in theology), reflecting his deep academic grounding.
Ordained as a priest in 1979 within the Diocese of Waiapu, Sir David served in various capacities across New Zealand, including as Vicar at Gate Pa, Tauranga, and as Director of Theological Education by Extension for the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia.
From Bishop to Global Ambassador
In 1993, Sir David was consecrated Bishop of Waikato, beginning a significant chapter in his episcopal ministry. His leadership was further recognised in 2008 when he became one of the three primates of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia, serving as the Archbishop of the New Zealand dioceses.
From 2013 to 2017, Sir David held a pivotal international role as the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Representative to the Holy See and Director of the Anglican Centre in Rome. In this capacity, he played a crucial part in fostering Anglican-Roman Catholic relations, notably facilitating meetings between Archbishop Justin Welby and Pope Francis. His work in Rome also championed ecumenical education and networking on critical global issues like modern slavery, human trafficking, and refugee ministry.
His significant contributions were acknowledged in 2014 when he was appointed a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to the Anglican Church. Further recognition came in 2024, when he was made a Knight of the Order of St John.

A Champion of Community and Justice
Throughout his career, Sir David has been a vocal advocate for social justice and community well-being. He actively participated in protests against nuclear testing in the Pacific, led a “Hikoi of Hope” march to highlight the needs of impoverished New Zealanders, and opposed the establishment of a new casino in Hamilton on community welfare grounds.
In his retirement, Sir David continues his commitment to service. He is the Priory Dean for Aotearoa New Zealand of the Order of St John, overseeing chaplains and chairing their leadership team. He also co-chairs the ‘Walking Together Foundation’ advisory committee, funding Catholic and Anglican Bishop partnerships for aid, development, justice, and peace internationally. His involvement extends to various trusts and boards, including the Ngāti Hauā Mahi Trust and the Solomon Islands Medical Mission Trust.
On June 24, St John’s Day, Sir David Moxon will step down as Priory Dean of the New Zealand Priory to assume his new role as Prelate.
St John International warmly welcomes Sir David John Moxon to his new role. His profound experience, unwavering commitment to faith, and extensive record of service make him an invaluable asset to our global mission.
