As the South Island Youth Leaders portfolio officer, Hadassah pays close attention to the individual needs of the diverse range of cadets that come through the youth leadership programme, ensuing they have the support they specifically need, and that their leaders are equipped to do this. Many of the young leaders that will serve Hato Hone St John long into the future, currently coming through the youth programme and taking on other roles, have been under the mentorship and guidance of Hadassah.
In her own words, Hadassah shares: “As New Zealand’s second recipient and the first wahine (woman) of the Sovereign’s Award, I’m deeply grateful for this honour, which recognises my work with the Navigating Challenges to Opportunities (NCO) Development Camps.
These camps were created to empower young leaders across Canterbury and Aotearoa. They were designed to spark creativity, expand mindsets, solidify values, and strengthen the skills needed to turn challenges into opportunities. Seeing the impact these camps have had — not only on participants but also on the leaders who have staffed them — and watching them go on to create meaningful change in their communities has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.

To now be joining the incredible legacy of the Order of St John as a young Order Member is a truly profound experience. As a cadet, I looked up to many inspiring Order Members. Now, to stand alongside them is both humbling and empowering.
For me, being an Order Member is about leading with integrity, encouraging others to believe in their capacity to make meaningful change, and recognising that our collective actions matter. True leadership inspires those around us to keep growing, to serve with humility, and to always strive for the good of our communities, no matter how big or small the task.
To every young person on their journey, whether with St John or not: lead with kindness, stay curious, and never underestimate the impact you can make simply by showing up with heart. Our generation has so much to offer, and our future will continue to be brighter by us choosing to walk together.”
